HP launched a new laptop battery on Monday that it claims will give a mobile worker up to ten hours of extra power.

The HP ultra-capacity battery will cost $199 (£114), and should go on sale in April. It is compatible with HP's range of business laptops — the HP Compaq 6100, 6200, 6300, 8200 and 9400 series notebook PCs and the 4200 series notebook/tablet PCs.

The ultra-capacity battery can be used in addition to a laptop's primary battery, an HP says it will boost battery life from 5 hours to 15 hours. It is a 12-cell Lithium ion unit, while previously HP's top-end battery product was an eight-cell Lithium ion unit that gave an extra five hours.

Charging HP's ultra-capacity battery could take some time, though – up to five hours if it's being charged while the PC is turned on. A "smart adaptor" should cut that time to between three and four hours.

HP also announced two new ranges of dual-core notebooks aimed at businesses.

The first product in the HP Compaq nx9400 range is the nx9420. It has a 17-inch display, and uses an Intel Core Duo processor and also contains 512MB of DDR Ram and 256MB of graphics memory. It will cost from $1,499 (£864).

The HP Compaq 6300 Notebook PC Series has a 15-inch monitor, and uses an Intel Core Solo processor. It will cost from $1,049 (£604).
