HP is to cut just under 1,000 jobs in the UK over the next year as part of its global restructuring programme.

The global computing firm has not revealed which of its seven sites at Bracknell, Birmingham, Bristol, Glasgow, London, Reading and Warrington will be affected. Most of the UK job losses are set to go in human resources, IT and finance. HP said on Tuesday afternoon it did not know how many of the redundancies would be compulsory.

This follows HP's announcement on Monday when it revealed 6,000 jobs would be cut across its EMEA region.

Earlier this year HP warned that job cuts were coming with IT, sales and services among the areas particularly vulnerable. The move to cut more than $1bn (£600m) a year in costs during the next two years marks one of the most significant initiatives Mark Hurd, HP's chief executive has launched since his arrival.

A spokeswoman for HP confirmed 968 positions in the UK alone would be cut under the company's restructuring programme. "HP employees have been told about the cuts today, a consultation process will now take place to decide what individual positions will go," she said.
