EMC has launched a new packaged solution that takes advantage of one of the key benefits of storage systems — their flexibility.

By packaging a mid-range, high-capacity Clariion disk array with software that allows the system to store, analyse and speedily retrieve, analogue data as well as digital, a standard storage system can become a state-of-the-art surveillance system.

At least that is what EMC hopes as it eyes the huge, and quickly growing, surveillance market that has, so far, been dominated by specialist suppliers.

EMC's Surveillance Analysis and Management Solution (SAMS) is a combination of hardware, software and services that let organisations store, archive, search-through quickly and analyse physical data and video from physical security devices. These can include surveillance cameras, access-control devices, intrusion-detection systems, identity-recognition systems, visitor-management products, sensors and alarms.

EMC claims that SAMS will offer "robust tools for video capture and load balancing video network bandwidth".
