Dell recalls over four million power adaptors

About 4.4 million AC adapters sold worldwide with Dell notebooks between September 1998 and February 2002 were recalled on Friday because of a risk of overheating, which could lead to a fire or electrical shock, according to Dell.
Dell has received seven reports of incidents involving the AC adapters overheating, but no injuries were reported, the government agency said.
The recall covers adapters used with some Dell Latitude, Precision and Inspiron notebook computers and have the word "DELL" as well as "P/N 9364U," P/N 7832D" or "P/N 4983D" written on the back, the CPSC said. They were included in computers sold between September 1998 and February 2002 and were also sold separately. The CPSC said not all adapters listed are being recalled so consumers should contact the company -- or visit this site -- to determine if their equipment is affected. The power adapters were manufactured by Delta Electronics.
Consumers who have recalled adapters will receive a free replacement. Consumers can contact Dell customer support on 0870 0106935, via the Internet at www.delladapterprogram.com, or indeed by post at Dell Inc., Attn: Adapter Program, 9701 Metric Blvd., Austin, TX 78758.
The company has faced problems with its power adapters before. In July, Dell offered to replace power adapter cords sold with some 38,000 notebooks. Arizona based Mobility Electronics manufactured that product.
