Worldwide sales of external disk storage systems hit $3.5bn (£2bn) in the second quarter, up 8 percent from the same period a year ago, according to research firm IDC. "Both the Asia-Pacific region and Japan experienced the first signs of real growth since the market downturn began," according to a statement from IDC analyst John McArthur.

The report comes on the heels of a study from research firm Gartner showing that sales of a more limited storage equipment category rose 5.1 percent in the second quarter. In IDC's report, EMC ranked first in external disk storage systems, with sales of $719m and 20.7 percent market share. In the same period a year ago, it had trailed HP, which this year fell into second place, with $631m in sales for the second quarter.
