Advanced Micro Devices' mainland ambitions received a further boost with a new deal to supply chips to China's second-largest computer maker.
Under a pact signed on Thursday, AMD64 processors -- the collective name for the firm's 64-bit Opteron server and Althon PC chips -- will now be used in Founder Group's upcoming line of computers.
The two companies will also work together to promote the new offerings, which should be launched within the next three months, they said in a joint statement.
Like most technology companies, AMD is eager to beef up its presence in the mainland's burgeoning computer market. The chipmaker has previously joined hands with Founder to set up a Beijing-based product development centre to focus on the Chinese consumer electronics market.
In addition, AMD has also sealed multiple alliances to market its chips in the country, including bundling arrangements with Hewlett-Packard and Chinese PC manufacturers such as Tsing-Hua Unisplendor and Amoisonic Electronics.
According to market research firm IDC, China's PC shipments totalled 13.3 million units last year, an 18 percent jump from 2002. Declining prices, large-scale government and education sector projects were cited as the main reasons for China's PC boom.
