Dell rolls out NAS for small business

Dell on Monday introduced a new network-attached storage server targeted at small businesses and branch offices of big companies.
The PowerVault 745N provides up to 4 terabytes of external SCSI-attached storage along with features such as data consolidation and backup. It runs Windows Storage Server 2003 and can be powered by either Celeron or Pentium 4 processors with clock speeds up to 3.2GHz.
NAS devices are dedicated storage systems that serve up files and data to computer users on a network. Dell has targeted storage as an area for growth. The company partners with EMC to develop and sell high-end storage area networks but makes its own PowerVault storage systems for smaller jobs.
The 1.75-inch-thick rack-optimised 745N comes bundled with software for system administration and data protection. It also supports backup devices and data protection software from Veritas and Yosemite.
The new product is available worldwide at a starting price of $1,799 (£976). It can run in Windows, Linux, NetWare, Unix and Macintosh environments.
