Toshiba unveils new optical drives

Toshiba on Tuesday announced new optical drives for mobile computers and portable projectors with updated features.
The company's storage device division said its new optical disk drives will provide higher media recording speeds for mobile computers.
The new SD-R6112 drives support multiple disc formats, including 2x DVD-R, 1x DVD-RW, 1x DVD-RAM read, 16x CD-R and 10x CD-RW. The second drive, the SD-R9012, supports the 8x DVD-ROM, 16x CD-R and 10x CD-RW formats. Both drives include buffer underrun technology and a 2MB buffer.
"Toshiba's new optical disk drives help OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) continue to build lighter, thinner and more functional mobile computers even as some system components, like display screens, grow larger," Maciek Brzeski, vice president of marketing at the storage device division, said in a statement.
In a separate product launch, the company's computer systems group announced two new portable projectors that are targeted at the fast-growing market segment of educators and small- and medium-sized businesses.
The TLP-S41U, which includes a detachable document camera, is priced at $1,799 (£1,145). The other model, the TLP-S10U, costs $999. Both have an 800-by-600-pixel resolution.
