PalmSource does OS deal with HuneTec

PalmSource said Monday it will license its Palm operating system to handheld maker HuneTec.

HuneTec, based in Korea, will use the Palm OS in a line of two-way pager/messaging devices, the companies said in a statement.

The handheld devices will be among the first spawned by a new PalmSource strategy designed to expand the operating system's potential market by allowing Palm OS devices to use older wireless networks for devices such as pagers to send messages.

The new HuneTec devices will use the WebLink Wireless network, which is based on Motorola's Reflex technology for two-way pagers.

The licensing agreement is the latest in a series of deals and contract renewals recently inked by PalmSource, which is the software arm of Palm.

PalmSource renewed its contract with cellphone maker Kyocera Wireless in mid-October. Sony, one of PalmSource's largest licensees, invested $20m in the Palm subsidiary in early October. And Samsung Electronics in late September extended its licence for the Palm OS through 2005.

PalmSource will also move into the Chinese market during the first half of this year, due to new licensing agreements with China's Legend Group and Group Sense.

HuneTec did not offer details on availability or prices of the new handhelds.

Put simply, what is the compelling reason to pay ~$200 extra for an Eee with Windows XP? A Windows Eee won't come with any useful applications and you'll have to buy anti-virus software to boot. The truth about low cost computing is that nobody really cares whether the machine is running Windows or Linux as long as its cheap, its easy to use and it works.
