Microsoft has today announced that its Xbox console -- which launched in Europe in March -- is, for the first time, going to cost less than Sony's PS2. The announcement, which will see Xbox consoles in Europe selling for approximately 249 euros or £159 in the UK, follows a similar announcement from Sony Europe that saw the price of a PS2 drop to around 259 euros or £169. This is the second price drop in under six months for Microsoft's console in Europe where it initially launched for approximately 470 euros or £299.

"The video games industry is more robust than ever this year, and new consoles and games are expected to dominate Christmas wish lists," said Sandy Duncan, vice president, Xbox Europe. "Xbox is extremely well-positioned to be at the top of those lists because it's the best value. The intense power and gaming experiences consumers get with Xbox is simply unsurpassed."

Xbox consoles will be available at the new lower price on 30 August. The question now is whether or not Nintendo, whose GameCube console still carries the lowest price tag of the three, will feel the need to announce a price drop of its own in time for Christmas.
