The Exilim EX-M1 is no thicker than a Palm Vx handheld, and comes with a 1.2-megapixel capture resolution and 4x digital zoom function. Captured images can be stored on a 12MB onboard memory or on an optional Secure Digital (SD) or MultiMediaCard (MMC) flash memory card.

As well as an MP3 function, the 87g EX-M1 sports a built-in microphone and speaker for voice recordings and video capture with sound. A pair of earphones and backlit LCD (liquid crystal display) remote control are also supplied.

"With the end of the first phase of (digicam) evolution focusing on basic performance, we felt it was better to propose new digital camera functions and styles and to produce new needs in order to expand the market further," Casio Singapore executive director Tatsuo Asai told reporters at a press briefing.

A slimmer Exilim EX-S1, which excludes MP3 and voice recording features, was also introduced.

According to Casio assistant marketing manager Collin Ong, Singapore will be the third country to launch the cameras, following Japan in June and Malaysia on Monday. He expects the units to be launched worldwide within the next two weeks, with the US release slated for mid-July.

Both models are available in brushed metallic silver. The higher-end Exilim EX-M1 is expected to retail at $321 (about £210) and the EX-S1 will cost $265 (about £170).
