News Burst: Intel gets defensive on IA-64

In a pre-emptive move against would-be cloners, Intel is attempting to patent the functions of its forthcoming IA-64 architecture.

A veteran of patent defence, Intel is abandoning the traditional application route at the US Patent and Trademark Office, instead opting to patent functions carried out by specific instructions, in effect tying up the workings of IA-64 to make it more difficult to copy.
