Via Technologies is planning to compete with Intel and AMD for the high-speed desktop PC market by the end of the year.

The company has announced plans to release a high-speed chip, the Samuel 2, in the fourth quarter of 2000, Via told business newswire Bloomberg. Samuel 1, released in June, is aimed at the low-end, cheap PC market. The company is best known for its Intel and AMD-compatible chipsets.

Via plans for the Samuel 2 to break the 1GHz speed barrier in the first half of next year, according to the report.
