PC manufacturer Gateway has discovered a problem with AMD's 1GHz "Thunderbird" microprocessors reports said Tuesday.

Gateway says the problem, which causes machines to freeze up, is limited to a small percentage of its computers. It confirms that no customers using the Thunderbird have reported problems.

Gateway has however ceased shipping 1GHz Athlon machines using the Thunderbird processor. Instead customers with have to make do with the original 1GHz Athlon processor.

The Thunderbird uses an L2 on-die cache giving it a performance advantage over the older Athlon chip.

See to Chips Central for daily hardware news, including an interactive timeline of AMD and Intel's new product launches through Q1 2001.

What do you think? Tell the Mailroom. And read what others have said.
