On Wednesday, Amstrad (quote: AMT) will take the wrappers of its much-rumoured communications device for business and consumers.

Developed with BT (quote: BT) and manufactured in Asia, the device will offer a personal information manager (PIM) and GSM communications in a budget-priced package. "Amstrad made its name in PCs and word processors by coming out with a cheaper product, and we reckon this is going to be another bonanza product," said a source familiar with the company's plans.

Amstrad is expected to set a low price in order to take a cut of airtime or subscription fees. "The price is killer low. You couldn't get a cup of cappuccino in the West End for it," said the source. "Sugar has always said that he wished he had a percentage of the monthly subscription Sky (quote: BSY) charges when he sold dishes, and this will generate that kind of revenue stream."

An announcement is expected on Wednesday, 29 March at 13:00 GMT.

Put simply, what is the compelling reason to pay ~$200 extra for an Eee with Windows XP? A Windows Eee won't come with any useful applications and you'll have to buy anti-virus software to boot. The truth about low cost computing is that nobody really cares whether the machine is running Windows or Linux as long as its cheap, its easy to use and it works.
