Wireless solutions provider Geoworks' controversial WAP patent claim received a further blessing on Tuesday when Japanese giant Toshiba signed up as its first licensee for the flexible user interface (Flex UI) technology.

Following initial notification last May, Geoworks officially informed the WAP Forum in January that it owned IP rights to parts of the WAP protocol, and would be collecting licensing fees from companies employing WAP technology.

Analysts and industry insiders are uncertain what effect this will have on the exploding wireless industry, believing it is too early to say what the long-term effects will be.
