Nokia teams up to ease WAP surfing

Surfing the Web with a WAP phone got easier Thursday thanks to a new technology from Nokia. The Finish telecoms giant has teamed up with Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Nocom, a wireless solutions company, on a solution that will allow over-the-air Web configuration for mobiles.
The technology will, according to Nokia, allow users to add Web site addresses to a handset in the same way a favourites bar works on a PC's browser. "This will help spread the word in terms of WAP," says Bob Brace vice president of marketing for Nokia Internet communications. He believes the hassle in moving from one site to another mean most users stick with the sites already configured onto their handsets.
The technology will be integrated into the Nokia open server platform for mobile applications -- Nokia WAP Server. It is currently beta testing and Nokia expects it to be adopted by members of the WAP Forum as part of the specification.
