The UK's first live WAP banking service went live Wednesday as the Woolwich teamed up with Vodafone and Nokia to offer 100 of its customers interactive banking over a WAP enabled mobile phone. The full service goes live in April.

Using a Nokia 7110 handset, customers will be able to view balances and transactions, pay bills, and transfer money on current, savings and borrowing accounts.

A Woolwich spokeswoman says the company would be "working closely with Vodafone to develop a customer proposition for integrating your personal finances," and claimed that it "was highly possible" that it would offer its customers some kind of preferential rates on Vodafone tariffs and Nokia hardware.

The lucky first 1000 customers offered the service were provided with a year's free line rental on a Nokia 7110 handset connected to Vodafone. In return they will provide feedback on the service.

Put simply, what is the compelling reason to pay ~$200 extra for an Eee with Windows XP? A Windows Eee won't come with any useful applications and you'll have to buy anti-virus software to boot. The truth about low cost computing is that nobody really cares whether the machine is running Windows or Linux as long as its cheap, its easy to use and it works.
