According to ZDNet UK sister publication PC Week Taiwan, Athlon's 500MHz processor has been in short supply in the heart of the semiconductor manufacturing area.

The 500MHz is currently Intel rival AMD's cheapest processor, causing demand to spiral in Taiwan. But because AMD's marketing strategy supplies chips to the US and Europe before Asia, the country has seen a serious shortage. AMD hopes to resolve the problem with a price cut by 24 January, when the 550MHz chip will become more affordable and the 500MHz chip begins to be phased out.
