Gateway adds more Athlon-based PCs

Former Intel stalwart Gateway has expanded its range of Athlon based Select PCs, boosting AMD's presence on the desktop.
The US computer maker last week announced it would begin using AMD's processors in the Select line, after earlier dumping AMD in favour of Intel. At the time, Gateway introduced a PC based on a 600MHz processor; but less than a week later, as of Sunday, the company added 700MHz and 800MHz models to the lineup.
The 700MHz PCs are available via Gateway's Web site for $2,028 (about £1,257) or $1,899, depending on features. The 800MHz models sell for $2,728 or $2,599.
Late last year it appeared as if AMD's relationship with Gateway had gone sour. In fact, it did after Gateway pulled the plug on the Select PC line, and then announced that it would no longer offer K6-2 chips in its Profile all-in-one PC, which was displaced last November with the Intel Celeron based Profile 2.
Recently, however, there had been much speculation that Gateway would resurrect its AMD relationship by offering a PC line with the Athlon chip. The announcement, ironically or not, comes at a time when Gateway has publicly criticised Intel over a shortage of high-performance Pentium III chips, which it says hurt its ability to sell high-performance PCs.
