ATI Technologies has announced official support for the Linux operating system and is releasing programming specifications for its Rage 3D graphics chips line.

The company already has open source support for its 2D products through the not-for-profit organisation Xfree 86. It is expanding this support to include 3D development for the Rage Pro and Rage 128 product families and is also releasing video capture and TV-Tuner multimedia development information for the Rage II, Rage Pro and Rage 128 product families.

"We are on target to become the graphics company of choice among Linux users. We will continue to provide the hardware and software support developers need to help ensure the success of Linux," said Henry Quan, ATI vice president of corporate marketing, in a statement.

ATI also announced that it has contracted Linux software developer Precision Insight to develop an open source 2D and 3D driver for the Rage 128. The source code for these drivers, expected in the first quarter of next year, will be given to the open source community.
