It is now possible to see the world through feline eyes thanks to researchers at Harvard University who have made an extraordinary breakthrough in neural science.

Tapping directly into a cat's brain and converting the electrical impulses therein into startlingly clear visual images, it is now possible to interpret brain function and, the researchers hope, interact with it directly.

Boffins at Harvard achieved this dramatic demonstration of real-life mind reading by plugging electrodes into 177 different cells within the brain of an anaesthetised moggy. Garrett Stanley assistant professor of biomedical engineering at Harvard said: "Trying to understand how the brain codes information leads to the possibility of replacing parts of the nervous system with an artificial device".
