Zip this...

We all love those colourful, chunky Zip drives but everyone knows that CDs beat them hands down in terms of storage space and portability. Not everyone has a Zip drive -- the CD is darn near universal.

The proliferation of CD-RW drives has obviously started to eat into Iomega's profits: Q2 results saw the company taking a bigger-than-expected loss. No surprise then that Iomega has gone all optical, announcing its first CD-RW drive -- the snappily titled ZipCD. The internal E-IDE 4.4.24 drive will come with an impressive collection of bundled software, including Adaptec DirectCD, Adaptec Easy CD Creator, Adobe PhotoShop 5.0 LE, and Avery Media Software to create proper CD labels and jewel case inserts -- making your bootlegged CD collection look as good as the real thing.

Iomega will also be selling CD-RW and CD-R discs, formatted and unformatted. The drive will start shipping in August for around $300 in the US, but you'll be able to get hold of one from www.iomegadirect.com if you can't wait for it to hit our humble shores.
