The Bank United of Houston has become the first US bank to offer ATMs that provide access to accounts by scanning the eyes of customers.

The US bank is using iris-scan technology that matches up a customer's eye pattern with an image stored on bank's computers. Once the scan is verified, a process that takes about two seconds, the customer is given access to his account.

Biometric technology is being piloted in the UK by the Nationwide Building Society. The technology, supplied by NCR, is being tested on customers in Swindon.
