Comdex Spring: iTronix 6250 Pro notebook - it's tough

How would you like a notebook that could be run over by a tank? A luminescent keyboard so you could compute in the dark? How about if it also had a touch screen and wireless CDPD (Cellular Digital Packet Data) connectivity as well? Even better, what if you could spill an entire can of coke on it, and it wouldn't miss a click!

It's also an analogue phone! What is it? The new iTronix 6250 Pro "ruggedised" notebook. ITronix has been in the rugged notebook market for a while. It offers another notebook and a Windows CE-based device that claim to be just as tough. This almost indestructible (at least when closed) system doesn't come cheap -- it starts at $4,500 (£2,750) -- and it's not as powerful as the latest comparible notebooks.

It runs on a Cyrix 266 MediaGX processor, can include up to 128Mb of RAM, and has a 3.2Gb hard drive. You can add in a CDPD data modem and analogue cellular phone option for another $1,500 (£915).

Take me to the Comdex Spring special.

Put simply, what is the compelling reason to pay ~$200 extra for an Eee with Windows XP? A Windows Eee won't come with any useful applications and you'll have to buy anti-virus software to boot. The truth about low cost computing is that nobody really cares whether the machine is running Windows or Linux as long as its cheap, its easy to use and it works.
