CeBIT: ISDN goes mobile with Inmarsat

Inmarsat, the London-based mobile satellite communications company, is showing for the first time at CeBIT a system which will provide ISDN-compatible data transfers of up to 64 kbits, via new four-kilo portable devices. Aimed at companies' looking to expand the reach of their IT network using global mobile satellite communications.
"With the help of Inmarsat networks, companies around the world will be able to expand the reach/range of their LANs and WANs beyond their geographical limits to a global operating network enabling clients, vendors and manufacturers to work together, no matter where they are in the world" said Andrew Ivey, project marketing manager of Inmarsat.
The mobile devices will be manufactured by Nera (Norway), Thrane & Thrane (Denmark) and STN Atlas Electronik (Germany), and should be available from the second half of 1999. Prices have not yet been set.
