The two, un-named and aged 16 and 17, are forbidden use of any computer without adult supervision for three years.

Despite the hack being into routine administration servers holding little more than staff payroll details, Deputy Defense Secretary John Hamre described the "organized and systematic" attack as having "the potential to disrupt military communications throughout the world."

Hamre said the ease with which the two had entered computers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and at the US Air Force had shown how weak the present systems had become.

The two, who went under the pseudonyms 'Makaveli' and 'TooShort', have also been ordered to serve 100 hours community service and pay more than $5,000 in damages.
