ZDNet revealed on Thursday that the UK's biggest PC retailer was to sell low cost, entry-level PCs -- a development denied by Dixons. The £599 Patriot, which contains the Cyrix MII-300 processor, will be available at 800 PC World, Curry's and Dixons stores. The deal is the latest in a string of wins for the National Semiconductor subsidiary which signed up Compaq, Packard Bell and Daewoo this year.

The Patriot includes 512Kb cache memory, 32Mb RAM, 2.1Gb hard disk, 32-speed CD-ROM, 14" monitor and Windows 98.

Nick Cadbury, PC World marketing director, said that demand for low cost, high-performance PCs for beginners was set to boom. "The Patriot multimedia PC brings new levels of affordability and functionality to this segment, and we expect very strong demand for it," he said.
