The Packard Bell 550 uses a Cyrix MMX-enhanced MediaGX processor as part of a deal announced last week. At the time, the companies speculated that future collaborations using Cyrix' "system-on-a-chip" could produce systems costing under $600 (£415).

The machine has 24MB of RAM, a 2.1GB hard drive, a 24-speed CD-ROM and a 56K-bps modem.

Packard Bell also introduced a 750 model which starts at $999 (£688) and uses a Cyrix MII 266MHz processor. It offers 48MB of RAM and a 4.3GB hard drive.

The systems are expected to be available in U.S. stores today.
