According to one UK distributor, this could be to make way for the PII Pentium II Dechutes Slot 1, 350 and 400 MHz, 512Kb L2 chips, which are due imminently. Intel is also due to announce its 100MHz bus 440BX chipset.

"The market is dire at the moment," said the distributor, who added that Intel could make unscheduled price cuts to try and boost interest in the PII and help kick out its x86 technology.
