Larry Burton, Motorola Semiconductor's vice president and director of public affairs issued a statement today denying the charge.

"Motorola, typically, does not respond to rumours," he said. "However, in this case we are making an exception. Motorola is not in discussion with Intel to sell its semiconductor operations. We categorically deny any suggestion that our semiconductor product sector is for sale and we will make no further comment on this erroneous rumour."

Burton's denial follows an active period for Intel which has seen the US giant enter negotiations for a stake in Samsung's semiconductor business.
