Maplin has about 45 stores in the UK including superstores trading under the Mondo name. However, the retail outlets won't carry stock; instead, users will be able to try out systems before buying and having the units delivered within a few days.

Simon Dunn, Maple marketing manager, said the arrangement is analogous to that of the Time Computer group with the Powerhouse chain of stores.

"It will be a store win a store," Dunn said. "This is a strategic partnership. Maplins sell everything to make a PC but they've never sold actual systems."

Dunn said he expects the retail route to more than double sales from the current average of 1,000-1,500 per month. Prices will start at £599 + VAT.

Starting with Watford and Thurrock branches, about 38 stores will carry the Maple PCs. Maple is owned by Canada-based distributor, Supercom.
