Despite introducing the system in the US, CompuServe today said it has no intention of pursuing the same route here in the UK. AOL, which is scheduled to shortly take over the online service, also recently went flat-rate in the UK.

"We have no plans at present to go flat-rate in the UK," said a spokeswoman. "We've gone live in the US but the networks, selling systems and other things are so different in each country that you have to address them individually."

She added that it was "too early" to assess take-up of CompuServe's flat-rate deal in the US.
