Intel ships 1Mb cache Pentium Pro

Intel said the doubled cache would be ideal for transaction processing, data warehousing and other intensive database applications. The firm expects typical configurations to be 4-CPU and larger symmetric multiprocessing servers.

The chip giant said the chip would better enable it to compete with non-x86 designs. The device will be built on Intel's 0.35-micron process and costs $2,675 in 1000-unit quantities.

Last Friday, Intel said future server platforms will include Compaq's PCI Hot Plug ASIC technology for adding PCI peripherals without having to first shut down the system.
