Compaq reports $4.8b quarter

World PC number one Compaq continues to wow observers with profits of $387 million on $4.8 billion revenues for its January-March first quarter. The numbers were respectively 66 per cent and 14.3 per cent up on the year-ago quarter.

Although most PC vendors are being forced to shrink profit margins, Compaq's actually grew to 24.5 per cent. The firm plans to introduce direct marketing and build-to-order packages during 1997.
