London-based Kable says IT spend has been on an eight per cent of total budget plateau for several years. One interesting movement is towards outsourcing which accounted for just £23 million in 1993/94 but swelled to £370 million in 1996/97. The big benefator here is EDS which took in the region of £264.7 million in Kable's estimate.

'The Civil Service IS Market Profile 1997' costs £3,950. Kable can be contacted by telephone on 0171-608 0900.
