Buyers of K6 systems could be on to a bargain as AMD plans to price its hot new processor 25 per cent below Pentium MMX chips. If the forecasts for K6 performance are correct that would equate to a far cheaper chip that has far better than Pentium Pro-class application performance on all popular operating environments, and throws in MMX's helping hand for multimedia.

166MHz, 200MHz and 233MHz speeds will initially be available. Unlike the Pentium II, the K6 will fit into a standard Socket 7 slot on Pentium motherboards.

AMD is expected to give the chip the full name of 'AMD K6 MMX Processor' although the part ordering name will be K6-PRII, signifying that the performance rating should be compared to a Pentium II.
