Rising numbers of home PCs may have helped cause the flash fire in RAM theft according to security experts. "Employers have detected memory chips disappearing from work and haven't been able to trace the culprits," said Mike Heylin of Circle Security, a maker of PC security hardware. "In talking to emplyers, we believe the increase in chip theft has been a result of more domestic users going on the Internet and needing to increase their memory to download entertainment software."

An exhibition focusing on computer security, Infosecurity 1997 will be held at London's Olympia from April 29.
