"The price of the OptiPlex range is down by up to 16 per cent," said David Matthews, Dell's OptiPlex product manager. An entry-level OptiPlex Gs 5133, based on an Intel 133MHz Pentium processor with 16Mb RAM, 1Gb hard drive and 15-inch monitor is £1,180 + VAT. At the high-end, an OptiPlex Gxi 5166, based on an Intel 166MHz Pentium chip, with 32Mb RAM, 1Gb hard drive, 15-inch monitor and two USB ports costs £1,570 + VAT.

"The new chassis is helping in terms of cost reduction," said Matthews. "Because of the easily-removed casing, manufacturing time is down. Also, it's very important to corporates that they have a low cost of ownership and that the PCs are easy to upgrade and service."

"[Future European legislation on] disposal is a key decision behind bringing out recyclable systems," he added. "We wanted to create a situation where the cost of being environmentally friendly is down. Over time, inevitably consumer PCs and other devices will follow a similar route."
