IBM and Intel yesterday stepped up efforts to cut the lifetime costs of networked PCs. The pair's Advanced Manageability Alliance is an open blueprint for the installation, configuration and management of LAN-connected systems.

Under the terms of the agreement, Intel will integrate IBM's Wake On LAN technology into Fast Ethernet LAN adapters software. Wake On LAN lets clients be remotely managed so that systems that have been closed down can receive upgrades and have other maintenance work completed without affecting office working. The IBM PC Company will put the cards into new PCs available from early 1997. The systems will also come with Intel's LANDesk network management software.

Intel said that the net effect will be lower cost of ownership through integral diagnostics to ease administration and network client installation and upgrade hassles.

The duo will also work together so that PCs can be controlled by two new software packages: IBM's LAN Client Control Manager and Intel's LANDesk Configuration Manager.
