CD-ROM Mac PowerBooks to ship November

Apple yesterday tried to expunge the memory of its troublesome PowerBook 5300 notebook line when it introduced its all-new PowerBook 1400 series. The four-strong range includes the first units to come with integral CD-ROM drives.
The notebooks use 117MHz and 133MHz PowerPC 603e processors, matched with 12Mb or 16Mb RAM, 750Mb or 1Gb hard drives, 11.3-inch dual-scan or active-matrix screens, two PC Card slots, and a six-speed CD-ROM drive that swaps out for a floppy drive.
Uniquely, the PowerBook can be personalised with any of seven colourful bundled 'BookCover' vanity panels. Another unusual feature is the keyboard that can be lifted up for memory cards or other features including Ethernet to be added. The 1400 ships with a software bundle of Mac OS 7.5.3, ClarisWorks, Claris Organiser, Apple Internet Connection Kit and Apple Remote Access. Expected street prices range from £1,680 + VAT for the basic model without CD-ROM drive to £2,800 + VAT. All ship in mid-November except the 133MHz model which will ship in January 1997.
In the first half of 1997, Apple plans to release new high-end PowerBooks.
