Apple's latest Power Macintosh line taps the latest PowerPC 604e to match Intel's fastest 200MHz clock speed. Shipping in September, Apple says MacBench scores rate the new line as 50 per cent faster than last year's class.

The 200MHz CPU, which has a 64Kb first level cache, debuts on the Power Macintosh 9500/200 £3,405), with the Power Macintosh 8500/180 (£3,090) based on a 180MHz version of the same chip. Both models come as standard with 32Mb RAM and 2Gb hard drive.

Other new models are the 604-based Power Macintosh 7600/132 (£2,200), up from 120MHz, but the 601-based Power Macintosh 8200/120 (£1,575) stays in the range. Both come with a standard configuration of 16Mb RAM and 1.2Gb hard drive.

All the new Power Mac units now come with an eight-speed CD-ROM drive, and Microsoft Office 4.21 is bundled throughout Europe on the 7600/132 and 8200/120. All prices are projected street prices and don't include VAT, monitor or keyboard.

The 601-based Power Mac 7200/90 and 8200/100 are being phased out and have been reduced in price to £1,105 and £1,170 respectively.

Apple will also sell a 180MHz Processor Upgrade Card next month at a price to be announced.
