Sony Electronics said Monday it has upgraded two of its Aibo robot dogs with a better brain to make them quicker and more responsive.

According to Sony, two new models will have an advanced central processing unit, called the super core, that will be twice as fast as the previous version.

Specifically, the new Aibo robots will have processors running at 384MHz, doubling the previous speed of 192MHz. Through Sony's 16MB memory stick, the company plans to boost Aibo's ability to handle new software applications.

Sony has been trying to boost software development for the Aibo by providing software development tools to academia and programmers.

The two new models will go on sale online on 1 July and through US retailers on 15 July with prices ranging from $1,299 (£866) and $1,499.

Last month, Sony announced a lower end model, the Aibo ERS-31L, which looks similar to a pug or bulldog.

While full medical records may be of (dubious) value at rear/base medical facilities, these could be provided much simpler by either physical disk or electronic transfer to an "in theatre" database for individuals posted in. That £80m (and it's associated running costs) could have been far better employed in resuscitating a disbanded infantry battalion or providing a big boost in equipment quality and quantity.
