Microsoft releases Xbox details

Microsoft has quietly upgraded the hard drive on its upcoming Xbox video game console. The company's online spec sheet for the console now lists a 10GB drive, rather than the 8GB originally promised. The Xbox will be the first major console to have a hard drive as a standard component. It will be used to save games, download add-ons and new games, and support other functions.

In addition, Conexant Systems announced that Microsoft will use its CX25871 video encoder chip to connect the Xbox video game console to both digital and traditional analogue TV sets. The chip includes support for new high-definition TV sets. Conexant announced earlier this week it will lay off 20 percent of its work force and will post a larger-than-expected quarterly loss amid a slowdown in demand for its products.

While full medical records may be of (dubious) value at rear/base medical facilities, these could be provided much simpler by either physical disk or electronic transfer to an "in theatre" database for individuals posted in. That £80m (and it's associated running costs) could have been far better employed in resuscitating a disbanded infantry battalion or providing a big boost in equipment quality and quantity.
