Apple delivers top-of-line Mac

Apple on Monday said it is shipping the top-of-the-line Power Mac G4 model it announced at January's Macworld Expo, San Francisco.

The 733MHz Power Mac G4 comes with a Pioneer-manufactured SuperDrive, which can read and record CD and DVD media, and comes with Apple's iDVD authoring software.

The 733MHz Power Mac G4 is available for $3,499 with 256KB of Level 2 on-chip cache and 1MB of Level 3 backside cache; 256MB of RAM; a 60GB Ultra ATA/100 hard disk drive; an Nvidia GeForce2 MX graphics accelerator with 32MB video SDRAM; a CD-RW/DVD-R SuperDrive; two FireWire and USB ports; four full-length 64-bit PCI slots at 33 MHz; 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet; AirPort support; and a built-in 56-Kbps V.90 modem

While full medical records may be of (dubious) value at rear/base medical facilities, these could be provided much simpler by either physical disk or electronic transfer to an "in theatre" database for individuals posted in. That £80m (and it's associated running costs) could have been far better employed in resuscitating a disbanded infantry battalion or providing a big boost in equipment quality and quantity.
