One in five jobs cut at BTopenworld

BT will cut one in five jobs at its flagship broadband service BTopenworld, and admits that the service is suffering along with the rest of the technology industry.
BT says that up to 200 jobs will be cut from BTopenworld but there will be no compulsory redundancies. Cuts will consist of retirees and staff absorbed into other areas of BT.
Job reductions at the loss-making division of BT are in line with the current trend within the Internet industry for cutting costs. Market distaste for technology stocks and a fall in online advertising has hit many Internet firms hard. "It would be ludicrous to say this has nothing to do with the general trend," says a BT spokesman. "There will be consolidation within the industry."
