News Burst: EU report finds junk mail costs £6bn

Junk email costs Web users world-wide around £6bn each year, a new report from the European Commission has found.

The report forms part of an ongoing European Union (EU) investigation into ways to combat the scourge of spam. The EU is aiming to strike a balance between individuals' right to privacy and Internet advertising interests and believes that a complete ban on email marketing, as has been enforced in some US states, could stifle the growth of European e-commerce.

While full medical records may be of (dubious) value at rear/base medical facilities, these could be provided much simpler by either physical disk or electronic transfer to an "in theatre" database for individuals posted in. That £80m (and it's associated running costs) could have been far better employed in resuscitating a disbanded infantry battalion or providing a big boost in equipment quality and quantity.
