Bonfield deflects government grilling

BT brushed aside criticism of the way it is opening up its network Tuesday, claiming it has acted "professionally" throughout the process.

Managing director Sir Peter Bonfield faced a grilling from the Trade and Industry select committee as part of its investigation into unbundling of the local loop, the process which will allow other companies to compete on an equal footing with BT. Bonfield claimed the telco was on schedule to meet the unbundling timetable.

The European Union is forcing all incumbent telcos across Europe to open up their networks to other operators as part of its plan to open up competition and make cheap broadband universally available.
