In the midst of the swirling maelstrom that is Live 2000, you could easily overlook a tiny set of must-have headphones. Most personal portables and MP3 players are let down by the rubbish supplied... But have no fear, just £20 will secure a pair of very sleek looking Sennheisers from its MX range.

The metallic blue MX500 delivers high sound levels, clear vocals, smooth treble and decent bass, even from low power devices such as MP3 and MD players. Much more important they don't make your ears sore after an hour of use...

An in-line volume control, and relatively funky carry case with cord winder, complete the package.

  • Frequency response: 18 -- 22,000 Hz

  • Transducer: dynamic, open

  • Impedance: 32 ohms

  • Max. sound pressure level: 119 dB at 1 kHz

  • THD: < 1 %

  • Ear coupling: intra-aural

  • Weight (w/o cable): approx. 6g

  • Connector: 1/8" jack plug

  • Cable: approx. 1m, copper cable

  • £19.99

While full medical records may be of (dubious) value at rear/base medical facilities, these could be provided much simpler by either physical disk or electronic transfer to an "in theatre" database for individuals posted in. That £80m (and it's associated running costs) could have been far better employed in resuscitating a disbanded infantry battalion or providing a big boost in equipment quality and quantity.
