Book publisher kills off CDs

Book publishers Dorling Kindersley is to cease production of CD ROMs with the loss of around 70 jobs it emerges Thursday.
DK will ditch its multimedia CD ROM production by the end of the year in response to a changing marketplace.
"It is part of a shift in strategy," says a DK spokeswoman. "We are moving away from CD ROMs and focusing on digital and online content." A new digital division will be set up and the publisher has plans to publish content on broadband TV.
The spokeswoman admits that online content is currently not making money but is keen to move with the times. "The point is that is the way the world is moving and no doubt there will be opportunities to charge for content in the future."
